It’s Easier When You Just Don’t Care

Santana

When it’s time for me to write, when it’s time for me to mop the floor, when it’s time for me to pay my bills, when it’s time for me to go to work, when it’s time for me to move forward I begin with Santana’s “You Just Don’t Care”. I wiggle my head back and forth every time the guitar goes into its thing and when the singer cries, “No, she just don’t care,” I push my lips together, stick my elbows out, and put my back into it. I like this song because I’m thinking , “Yes! I don’t care about the fact that I am tired or that my body aches. I don’t care for the temptation to quit. I’m pushing ahead anyway. That’s right, I just don’t care for the doubters, the naysayers, or the Debbie Downers (especially the ones in my own mind).

I found that having a playlist specifically created to encourage me to take action was my way of taking responsibility for achieving my objectives. It’s a neat trick that takes me out of my head and into my soul and true intention. I win! I win! Every time. I get the hard work done and live to laugh about it.

How do you prepare to tackle the day ahead, the work ahead, or the difficult transformation you seek? Funny how a little thing like your favorite piece of music can make a such  big difference.

When I work with my clients I encourage them to set up a music playlist that they cannot resist feeling good about. Making your own motivational playlist is an example of you taking responsibility and saying “yes” to the person you are becoming. You are in charge. Let the music take you there.

Maybe you prefer musicians very different from Santana. Music is personal. What works for me may not work for you, and it doesn’t have to. You might hate my playlist. I don’t care about that. What I do care about is delivering this message to you:  Your favorite music can save your life. Use your music and JUST GET IT DONE NOW!

Now I am going to share with you not only my personal “Krista Get Moving” playlist, but also a few tips  and attitude suggestions. Feel free to use whatever parts of my list and suggestions you want.

  1. Santana, “You Just Don’t Care” – Irresistible Funk. Get the joints warmed up. It may not be pretty and you might be a bit stiff, but move anyway. Move like you just don’t care. Do whatever comes naturally.
  1. Kurt Elling, “Little Girl Good Bye” It’s true that you want more than this moment and that’s OK. One day. Hope continues. Just hum a little. Sing a little. Say goodbye to what you must say goodbye to. Maybe this is the last time you have to do this type of work because better days are coming with the girl who doesn’t say goodbye. True love, or freedom, or the end of pain, whatever you are looking forward to, embrace the possibility. Move the hips. Shake the shoulders. Seduce the better day into your life.
  1. Brad Maldau, “When it Rains” Stretch. Move with grace. Move to the drum, that is your constant below the current. Step. March. Move the feet. Lift the chin and the head and the eyes. Shake the shoulders. Better days are coming.
  1. Oren Lave, “Her Morning Elegance” Sing. Arms waving in the air. Spin as well as you can. Glide and feel that you are not alone.
  1. Mandril, “Lord of The Golden Baboon” Let the brass,  percussion, and bass march you through your work. Stay focused and Just Get It Done Now! March. Type. Clean. File. Push.
  1. Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea, “Fiesta” Celebrate your unique qualities. Stand still and listen and know that you are special. Breathe deep. Select your next target and get more work done. Dance! Create a new body movement that no one has ever seen before.
  2. Mandril, “Ape is High” Whatever you do, end with jumping up and down.
  1. Maxwell, “Bad Habits”Come back to irresistible-funk for a cool down. Put last things in their place with the bass. Acknowledge that this is enough for now. There will be more work to do in the future. The badness, the dirt, the bills, the hard work will present another opportunity in the future. Snap fingers. Nod head. You did well enough. You are good enough.

If you read through the entire list, whew, that was a lot of music and movement! I haven’t shared that information with anyone before, so leave me a message so I know I am not out here all by myself.

I absolutely loved this idea when you first advised me to create a playlist of my own. I took your advice and compiled a list of my own “feel good” music and I have to say it works like a charm! Moments when I find myself getting upset (and if I’m able to play my music) this is my go to for a peace of mind. Thank you for sharing! 🙂

    Krista,
Thank you for including me. As, I stated before, I love your easy breezy style. I think it’s a super idea to select music that motivates you. Jill Scott, Living My Life It’s Golden. Pharrell, Happy. Classical music gets the creative juices flowing too.

Music for me is like oxygen I have to have my fix at least once a day. When I have work to do or I’m cooking I always have music playing. It makes the task much more enjoyable.
