At the end of the day, when I went for a walk, I wanted to get fresh air, breathe deep, listen to the river, clear my mind, and get inspired. So I chose a new path in a familiar setting and immediately I got that thrill of the unknown. “What will this path lead me to?” I wondered.
My new adventure highlights included lots of gnats, horse poo, and a dead end. I stood still for a moment to contemplate my arrival. While I didn’t find myself in a new place, I did gain a new perspective. I was able to see what I had seen before, but from a new angle, a new position.
Someone had built a fort in the woods and that’s when I realized that I wasn’t alone, which isn’t always a good thing (think competitors, predators, editors). I savored the view, then turned around and went back the way I came because the only thing worse than taking the wrong path is not knowing when to turn around and head back home.
A great way to breathe new life into your business, relationships, or career is to get out of your comfort zone. Out of my comfort zone, I was more likely to remember what I was looking for before I became complacent and accepted what was mediocre or stopped finding what was special in the every day.
